The Merdeka Square is pretty much in the center of Jakarta. It has been around, under different names, since the 18th century. Today it is called the independence square. It is one of the largest squares in the world measuring a square kilometre. In the middle of it is the national monument called Monas (short for Monumen Nasional). If you are patient you can take a small elevator up to a viewing deck. There is no restaurant up there. The waiting time can be very long since the elevator only takes a handful of people each time.
